First Star I See Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Philips- Feature and Review

A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.

Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.

Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is...I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just...mildly unhinged.”

Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants to fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.

And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.

From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

MY REVIEW:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The First Star I see Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a 2016 William Morrow publication.

This book is simply marvelous!
It has been a while since I’ve read a book by SEP, too long, in fact. This book reminds me of just how good she really is.

Piper Dove owns her own private detective agency, but it’s barely making ends meet. Currently, her assignment is to investigate former football superstar, Cooper Graham, for a client thinking of investing in Cooper’s new nightclub.

But, when her cover is blown, Cooper insists she reveal her client’s identity, which she refuses to do, but doesn’t mind telling him who on his staff is skimming off the top and various other issues inside his club. Realizing that Piper could be a valuable asset he hires her himself, but may soon regret that choice, when she proceeds to push all his buttons, buttons he didn’t even know could be pushed… by anyone!

This is one zany, highly entertaining installment in the ‘Chicago Stars’ series. Piper is my kinda gal. No frills, no lace, so fuss, no muss for Piper. She doesn’t have a fake bone in her body! She calls it like she sees it, and is a ‘what you see, is what you get’ person, which is a rare thing these days.

Cooper, has lived in a privileged, entitled world for so long, surrounded by beautiful Hollywood actresses and ‘yes’ men, that he doesn’t know what to think when Piper doesn’t automatically bow down and worship him at his feet. So, flabbergasted is he, Piper has him eating out of her hand, much to his chagrin. I loved watching Cooper slowly fall in love with Piper, which is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to him!

There is, of course, a mystery to solve when it becomes clear that someone is out to get Cooper, which leads to one of the most screwball investigations I’ve seen in a while.

The characterizations are nearly perfect, the dialogue witty and sharp, with a stellar supporting cast.

If you are looking for a top rate romantic comedy or romantic suspense novel, look no further!

Money. Fame. Endorsements. Blake Carpenter had it all—before his professional football career spiraled out of control. Determined to rebuild his life, he takes on coaching the high school team in his Colorado hometown. Despite a few fumbles, Blake knows he can lead these boys to victory. As long as he can keep his eyes on the prize and off the team's distractingly gorgeous physical therapist.

Annabelle Turner knows all about the scandal that cost Blake his NFL career, and she'll be damned if she's going to let his mistakes hurt her team. What she doesn't count on is the intense attraction that turns every heated run-in they have into a wildly erotic competition. Point by point, play by play, kiss by kiss, they try to keep things professional for the good of the team. But when the score is this close—and the passion this fierce—it's anybody's game . . .

READ AN EXCERPT:

I don’t like people interfering with my work, Ms. Turner,” Coach Blake Carpenter told her.

Gee, really?

And I don’t like people telling me what to do,” he added.

Again. Shock.

You’re used to having your way, aren’t you?” he asked Annabelle with a tilt of his head.

Always.“Sometimes,” she lied.

Well, so am I,” he stated.

No kidding? I never would have guessed.”

This time he did smile. A slow curling of his lips that matched the curling of her toes in. “So who do you think will win, Ms. Turner?”

You might if you ever stop calling me that.”

He grin grew. “Why would I want to do that?”

Because it turns me on. “Because it’s too formal. Just call me Annabelle.”

That’s not why you don’t like it,” he countered in a low voice.

They stared at each other like two caged fighters waiting for the other to wave the white flag. Only Annabelle didn’t give up, and she wasn’t about to start now. If Blake Carpenter expected her to admit defeat, he’d better think again.

MY REVIEW:

Winner Takes All (Champion Valley, #1)Winner Takes All by Erin Kern
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Winner Takes All by Erin Kern is a 2016 Forever publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a cute contemporary sports romance centered around Blake Carpenter, a former NFL golden boy, who left the sport amid injury and scandal, and Annabelle, a physical therapist, determined to keep tight control over life.

After returning to his hometown in Colorado, Blake is given a one shot chance to pull a winning season out of the local high school football team. But, when Annabelle arrives, insisting on helping the team out with physical therapy, the two clash right from the get-go - but maybe that bothersome chemistry between them has something to do with that?

While this story is adorable and sweet, with a sprinkle of humor, especially from Annabelle’s mother and the ‘Beehive Mafia’, the story also addresses the darker side of professional sports and the consequences of dealing with major injuries without proper rehab and therapy, and being at the mercy of coaches and trainers who do not have the athlete's best interest at heart, which can lead to a lifetime of severe pain, among other things.

Annabelle’s personal story is emotional, as well, because she is struggling with her responsibilities to her mom and the resentment she feels for her free spirited sister, but maybe she’s had the power to change her life all along, she’s just needed to realize it.

I got caught up in this story and wound up finishing it in just a few hours. So, I would have to say I really enjoyed it. Blake and Annabelle not only found a way to make their relationship with each other work, but they helped one other face their individual stumbling blocks and issues, in order to live happier, more fulfilled lives.

Overall, this is a well- rounded romance, that leaves Blake and Annabelle is a good place, one filled with hope and promise.
